Choosing a selective pallet racking system

Selective pallet racking gives operators access to individual pallets without moving other pallets out of the way. It is a useful starting point when your warehouse handles many SKUs, frequent replenishment, or products with different turnover rates. Choosing the right configuration means balancing access, storage density, handling equipment, and the dimensions and weight of your actual loads—not simply fitting the largest possible number of bays into the building.

Inventory access and product mix

Start with the number of SKUs, pallets per SKU, and how often each product moves. A broad product range with frequent picking often benefits from direct pallet access. For large quantities of the same product, compare selective rack with drive-in or drive-through storage before choosing a layout.

Pallet dimensions and load requirements

Provide pallet dimensions, loaded pallet heights, and maximum load weights when requesting a design. Beam levels, bay sizes, and component capacities must be selected for the proposed configuration. Do not assume a rack can carry a particular load based on appearance or on a different rack's capacity.

Aisles and warehouse workflow

Aisle space is part of the storage design, not leftover floor area. Review forklift requirements, receiving and shipping areas, access routes, and picking patterns alongside rack placement. Pro Space Racking's design consultation includes SKU analysis, traffic-lane planning, and custom layouts to connect storage with daily operations.

What to share for a pallet racking quote

  • Facility dimensions or an existing CAD layout
  • Pallet dimensions, loaded heights, and maximum weights
  • SKU count and the number of pallets normally stored
  • Forklift details and receiving, picking, and shipping requirements
  • Whether the project is a new installation, expansion, or relocation

Frequently asked questions

How does selective pallet rack differ from drive-in rack?

Selective rack provides direct access to individual pallets from an aisle. Drive-in rack uses deeper storage lanes to increase density, with less direct access to each pallet. The better choice depends on your product mix, rotation requirements, and handling process.

Can pallet racking be configured for different products?

Yes. Pro Space Racking offers adjustable systems and custom layouts. The proposed dimensions and load requirements still need to be reviewed for the specific configuration; adjustability does not mean that every product or weight is suitable.

Do you offer installation and support?

Pro Space Racking provides warehouse racking design, installation, relocation, maintenance, and inspection services. Include your facility location and project scope in your inquiry so the team can discuss the relevant services and availability.
